What will I be doing as an Intern?

Don't worry!  Whether from hospital or it's your first rotation you may be apprehensive.

Induction will come first. An Induction book & full training etc will be given. This will take a few days.

Then a gentle immersion in GP life!

At all times you will be overseen by your GP. All clinical decisions should be run past them.

  • You may sit in with your Trainer for a time, perhaps occasionally hot seating or parallel consulting.
  • Then taking a cases to present to us - increasing in complexity as time passes. You will have plenty of time!
  • Chronic Disease Management run to a set criteria - taking cases in this is an excellent way to see many issues.
  • Observing then performing procedures  - within scope of internship - bloods, 24 hour monitors, ECGs, vaccinations, suturing, joint injections, venesections, the list is endless....
  • "Charting!" - GP are usually holders of the patients medical records. These must be kept contemporaneous. Coding new diagnoses, amending prescriptions can be part of your role.
You will have dedicated admin time daily during your working day for this.
  • Shadowing other team members.
  • Presentations. As well as receiving a weekly tutorial we will ask you to use EBM to help us in clinical practice!
  • Research or Audit.
  • Self directed learning-  this is often code for " coffee"....
  • Exposure to some aspects of Practice Management. You can attend Practice Meetings.

Interns are not expected to attend OOH. You are more than welcome to attend  local CME in some instances.
