What if I’m struggling?

Working in Medicine can be stressful and demanding.

To feel that you are struggling simply means that you are human. We all struggle, we all use “resilience” too much.

Overwhelmed? Feeling out of your depth? Imposter syndrome?

GP lends itself to more uncertainty, more use of time, undifferentiated presentations – often with multiple issues – in a limited time. Getting used to this can be difficult. We have all experienced crisis at some point (as interns and beyond!). Burnout is a very real issue in the medical profession.

Try to recognise these emotions and be sure to reach out for support from friends, colleagues and local wellbeing supports. Your mentor and Practice based colleagues are there to help; often we will have had the very same emotions. We want to ensure you are able to enjoy your intern year, despite these challenges.

This is a job, not your identity. Be kind to yourself.

Available Supports

Supports can be found in each Hospital group; these should be made available to you at orientation.

Please reach out to your Intern network who can guide you to the best supports in your region.

Personal Issues

Sometimes, it’s not work. Relationships, family, money, children or illness can effect us all.

Whether it be your physical health, mental health, work-life balance, financial worries or relationship stressors; these all play a role in ensuring the wellness of our doctors. It is important to give the same care to personal factors as well as issues within your job role.
